1993: Village Pilote was created to support disadvantaged families in the suburbs of Dakar; building and setting up a pre-school for children not at school, a waste collection site and a rugby club.
1995 – 2002: Partnership with the DESPS (Office of Educational and Social Welfare – a service of judicial protection orientated towards education and social issues and responsible for “all matters concerning the protection, rehabilitation and reintegration of children and young people aged 0-21 who are in danger or who are in conflict with the law”) in order to be able to offer to the most disadvantaged children a range of support mechanisms based in the Community hall of Thiaroye (building a school, dormitories, workshops providing professional training).
2001 – 2003: A total immersion programme for French adolescents from difficult backgrounds placing them in Senegalese families and involving them in construction projects building social housing for the disadvantaged.
2002: Village Pilote focuses on the problem of street children in Senegal and begins to catalogue and study the key elements of the issues concerning street children.
2003: The first mobile support teams go out onto the streets of the suburbs of Dakar in search of children who need help.
May 2004: The Refuge, a residential centre in the Dakar suburb of Pikine, opens its doors to children aged 3 to 12. Its ultimate objective is the reintegration of the children with their families. (see more Centre for Children)
February 2008: Following the success of The Refuge, and to respond to the specific needs of former Street Children aged 17 - 25, Village Pilote opens a second residential centre Springboard, at Lake Rose. This centre was built entirely by the young men themselves, under the guidance of professional construction workers and with the objective of teaching them building skills. 2012: A new centre, Oasis, will open its doors to adolescents aged 13 – 17 on the Springboard site.
