One month after returning to France… I can’t stop thinking about the 8 months I spent in Senegal which brought me so much on a personal, professional, but above all on a human level…  Far from the Western World, my « European » eyes witnessed numerous scenes depicting the reality of Africa but one in particular awakened my curiosity: Street Children.

Oulimata Diop - Resumé of Internship - March 2011

I participated in a literacy class at The Refuge.  This is a time when the children want to show what they know.  When the literacy teacher walks round the class, they apply themselves; they show their motivation and their willingness to learn.  They want to succeed at what they’re asked to do.  This gave me the impression that although they have lived on the street, it didn’t mean that they had given up.  They had not lost hope.  Which made me ask myself; how had the teachers managed to reactivate this hope, this desire to do the right thing, to succeed?  In fact, this is what happens when they take part in the gardening activity.
